How to Wash Your Hair the Right Way
Thursday, June 1, 2023
Clean hair is something we all aspire to have but sometimes struggle to achieve. Whether it’s due to busy schedules, environmental factors, or simply not knowing the right techniques, having clean and healthy-looking hair can feel like an elusive goal. But fear not, for there are plenty of simple and effective ways to ensure your hair stays clean and fresh.
In this blog, we’ll explore some of the steps to achieving clean hair:
1. Wet your hair thoroughly.
Let your hair get fully wet with lukewarm water for at least 1 minute, then run your fingers through it to make sure it is fully wet. This helps open the cuticles, making it easier for your hair to absorb conditioner later. Depending on how thick your hair is, this may take longer than you think.
2. Apply a shampoo that suits your hair.
It’s important to choose a shampoo that is best suited for your needs. Celeb hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons recommends products with naturally derived elements, such as caffeine and rosemary oil, for fine hair, while for curly or coily hair, creamier formulas with ingredients like amino acids are recommended.
For colored hair, bond-rebuilding shampoos and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners are recommended, and for bleached hair, a clarifying shampoo may be a good idea. However, it is important not to use it too often, as clarifying products can dry out the hair.

3. Go easy on your scalp.
Scrubbing with nails on the scalp is not recommended, as it can cause serious irritation or infections. Instead, take the time to massage the scalp with gentle pressure, without nails, for about 3 minutes. Avoid circular or harsh back-and-forth movements, and move your fingers and palms gently to avoid tangling and damaging the follicles.
5. Apply and leave your condition in for five to seven minutes.
Conditioner should be applied from the mid-shaft down to the ends of the hair, and let it sit for the recommended time (usually found on the bottle). While the conditioner is still in the hair, a wide-tooth comb can be used to detangle it. Anthony Cole, lead stylist for Sebastian Professional Haircare, warns against conditioning at the root. While some conditioners need to sit for two to three minutes, others need five to seven. Your hair will become smoother and softer after this amount of time, making it shiner once it’s dried.
7. Towel-dry your hair and follow up with protectant.
The way you handle your hair after washing it is crucial to maintaining both its general health and aesthetic appeal. It’s not advised to brush your hair after a shower because it can cause the structure to break down. Use a soft towel instead and allow it to air dry. Apply heat protectant after towel drying, especially if you’re going to use a hot tool. The hair must be completely dry before using such heat. Remember, this may take longer than you think!
Bonus: Properly double-shampoo your hair.
Sulfate-free shampoo is a great way to wash your hair, but it can be difficult to create a sudsy lather. However, they are effective at removing dirt and oil from your scalp and offer a variety of hair-nourishing benefits. To wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo, you need a little more shampooing savvy and extra effort. Here are some things you need to remember when double-shampooing:
- When double shampooing, it is important to use a sulfate-free shampoo, as sulfates can be harsh on your hair and scalp.
- Make sure that you are rinsing the first lather out completely before applying the second one. Focusing on the roots, massage the product into your scalp for up to a minute.
- After rinsing out the second lather, use a conditioner on the ends of your hair to restore moisture and nourish your hair.
